Do Ultrasonic Dog Repellents Work Questions
Do ultrasonic pest repellents work and are they really safe?
I want to keep mice away from my garage, but I don't want to use any toxins or traps. I am wondering if these ultrasonic pest repellents really work. I have a dog and I would be worried about what effect constant ultrasonic bombardment would have on him, and even on myself and my girlfriend. I have read that these systems affect the nervous system of the animals and I don’t want my "feeding and communication systems" to be affected.
Get Rid of Mice Naturally With Peppermint Oil.Buy a bottle of 100% pure Peppermint Essential Oil (you can buy an inexpensive brand as long as it says 100% pure on the label). Place 1 or 2 drops of the oil on a cotton ball and place the cotton balls around the house where the mice are visiting. They will just leave the premises.Smoke in the form of incense is an alternative natural deterrent, but you can't put it in the same tight spaces as peppermint balls.
Use instant mashed potatoes; they are much cheaper and alot safer than rat posions. Place a few tablespoons where the mice are seen most often. The mice will eat the instant potatoes and die because the potatoes will expand in their stomachs before they can fully digest them.
Also, sticky pads work wonderfully. These are typically scented like peanut butter. The mice are attracted by the smell and when they run over to see what smells so good, they get stuck on a substance like thick goo. In their attempt to free themselves, they end up killing themselves (sorry to be so unpleasant) by flipping around. These pads are also nice for trapping stray insects. These can be purchased in a home store as well. Here's a hint. These pads are extremely sticky. If you use them and something gets stuck that you don't want, cooking oil will enable you to remove the item.
There is an electronic unit that emits a beeping sound that rodents hate. This sound is not a hazard to dogs and cats and can be bought at at HD for about $30. But some studies suggest that they are ineffective. I tried them personally and had no success with them. Some argue that the ultrasonic repellents are only good at startling them at first, and they then grow accustomed to the sound after awhile.
Hope I was helpful, and if you do decide to use a toxin to kill the mice be extremely careful that your dog can't get into it so it isn't poisoned too...Good Luck!!!
